In a disturbing incident reported on Friday, a government hospital doctor, Dr. Sujan Das, fell victim to a violent assault by extortionists in Phulia's Ghoshpara, Nadia district. Dr. Das was attacked while commuting from Shantipur to Phulia Primary Health Center last Sunday. The traumatized doctor filed a complaint at Shantipur police station, initiating an investigation into the heinous act.
As news of the assault spread, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a protest demanding the swift arrest of the culprits involved in the attack on Dr. Das. On Friday, tensions escalated during the demonstration, leading to clashes between BJP workers/supporters and the police. Reports indicate that the protesters overturned police barricades, reflecting the intensity of their demand for justice.
On Friday night, the Shantipur police successfully apprehended the main accused in the assault case from Phulia. The arrested individual was then transported to the Ranaghat court on Saturday for legal proceedings.
The situation surrounding the assault had become highly charged, with political figures like Ranaghat BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar expressing strong opinions. Sarkar emphasized the urgency of capturing the criminals involved in the attack, criticizing what he perceived as a sluggish response from the government. Opposition leader Shubendu Adhikari visited the injured doctor in the hospital on Thursday.
